Perched at the top of the Nui Nho/Small Mountain (which is more like hill), the French-built Vung Tau Lighthouse (Ngon hai dang Vung Tau) is still operational and gives visitors a 360-degree vista of the city and sea.
The good news is you can reach the top of the hill by motorbike or car, but at the end of the day, the shaded winding road makes a pleasant case for getting some exercise. You’ll see both tourists and locals alike strolling up as the sun begins its swan song.
The start of the steep road up is at Mr Ket Cafe on Ha Long Street, just past the hydrofoil pier and Lucy’s Sports Bar. It’s 2.8 kilometres to the top. Motorbike parking is 5,000 dong. If you take a taxi up, arrange for the taxi to wait for you.
