A popular weekend escape from Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau rocks at weekends when beach-starved locals and expats descend in numbers, but it is relatively quiet during the week. The city enjoys a spectacular location on a peninsula, with ocean on three sides; the light and sea air makes it a refreshing break from sultry Saigon.
Oil is big business here, so the horizon is regularly dotted with oil tankers, and petro dollars dominate the economy, inflating prices considerably.
Vung Tau is a remarkably civilised-looking city of broad boulevards and imposing colonial-era buildings, but a slightly seedy bar scene also flourishes here, accommodating the tastes (and wallets) of retired Anzac servicemen, Russian expats and oil workers.
Historically few travellers ever bothered to visit the city, but it makes a good place to start (or end) an intriguing coastal road trip to Mui Ne, and beyond.
Bai Sau stretches nearly 10km in southern Vung Tau, extending from Nho Mountain to Chi Linh area. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam. The advantage of this beach is slight waves and crystal water, and there are many restaurants and hotels nearby.
Bai Truoc is a quiet small bay, located between Lon (Big) and Nho (Small) Mountains. In addition to white sand and blue sea, this place is adorned by the grandeur of Lon, Nho and Nguu Mountains. However, this beach has plenty of rocks so it is more appropriate for walking and photography rather than swimming.
Bai Dua Beach is not wide, just for about 20-30 people. The sea and the landscape here are marvelous.
Vong Nguyet is at the food of Nho Mountain. From here visitors can see the Jesus Statue on the mountaintop. This beach is pristine; to come here, visitors must walk through a steep mountain trail.
Bai Dau is about 3km from Bach Dinh (White Palace). This is a sheltered beach with cliffs of strange shapes. The terrain here is good for taking pictures and having fun, but not for swimming.
Thuy Tien Beach opened for tourists in the past few years. With ideal length and pristine, romantic beauty, it is appropriate for most types of services or sea sports.
Chi Linh Beach is located inside Chi Linh resort, 3km from Vung Tau City. With the beauty of the sea, mountains and cool air, this place is called "Dalat at sea".
Doi Nhai Beach is an ideal place for camping in big groups. Because it has no services, you should take water and food.
Ho Tram Beach has white sand, blue sea, golden sunshine and an ideal depth and wavelength. However, most of the beach is managed by resorts.
Suoi O has not been exploited yet, so it is completely pristine.
